Mandatory training on ethics for elected officials

Under Section 15 of the Act on ethics and professional conduct in municipal matters (LEDMM), any newly elected or re-elected member of a municipal council must, within six months of the start of his/her term and any subsequent term, participate in a training session on municipal ethics and professional conduct.

The objective of this training is to encourage ethical reflection on municipal matters, to promote adherence to the values set out in the municipality’s code of ethics and professional conduct, and to allow the acquisition of skills to ensure understanding and compliance with the code’s rules. The training should also focus on the role and responsibilities of elected municipal officials.

All elected municipal officials must, within 30 days of their participation in the mandatory ethics training session, declare it to the Director General of the municipality, who then reports to Council.

The municipality must keep an updated list of elected officials who have participated in the training on its website.
